I am not into gurus but spiritual truth is wherever you find it. One teacher who continually gives me insights and different ways of looking at truths is a lady in Canada named Maticintin. She once studied under an Indian teacher and went by the name Winged Wolf at that time and I bought one of her books in those days. I have tracked and learned from her ever since. One of the most overwhelming things she has taught is that contact with our spiritual center is life, not just a part of life. Everything else is just activity. Here’s how she puts it in her Secrets of the Golden Spiral: “Most people who practice in the silence, or sit in meditation think such a practice helps us endure life or helps us do and accomplish in life. It is the other way around. The Silence is life. What we do is make ripples in the water. We make waves and then entertain ourselves in the waves.” If you can set your judgmental mind aside for just a short time (you can always pick it back up if you miss it) try this little experiment: center yourself in your very highest thought of God and let this awareness expand and become deeply meaningful to you. Now look at your planned activities for the day and see them as waves emanating from this basic awareness that God is life and all else are activities – just ripples, just waves. I don’t know how this will affect you but the way it changed me was dramatic. The quality of my waves and ripples became richer and more rewarding. To my surprise, I became more successful in those activities. I began this experiment when I was an agnostic. I was broke, freshly divorced and living in a one-room apartment. I centered into my highest concept of God which was Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and His sermon on the mount. Against all odds, I decided to run for county executive. Even the chairman of my party said, “You don’t have a chance.” I thought Jesus washing the feet of His disciples showed that God wants to minister to us and touch us in the humblest as well as the grandest ways. So why could He not empower me to serve my county? I won the primary by 1,700 votes and the general by 6,700. I still say it was not me that won but that growing sense of God as my Source and the riding of the waves that came from that realization. As Maticintin said, I was just playing in the water! My real success was not getting elected. It was contacting my Source and playing in the waves. That is exactly how I have looked at everything I have done since those days. I look back over my life and I do not feel I was living at all before I became aware of the presence of God and anchored my consciousness in it. I felt disjointed, unconnected. There was an emptiness there that nothing seemed to fill. It is strange that we can feel empty when the very Presence of God gives life to our very being and is available, as Jesus said, to spring up inside with living water. Do people think Jesus was just toying with us? Do they actually believe this beautiful man would lie to us about something so important? If it were not true, he would have told us so. I know it is true that “in Him we live, move and have our being,” but beyond this thought of God as the livingness in everything, there is a very personal way we can relate to the Presence within our own being. It adds a beautiful, sweet, grand and glorious touch to all of life. Contact with your spiritual center is life. Now, go play in the waves!
