LICKING HONEY OFF THE KNIFE

Someone recently said to me, “We start dying the day we are born. Life is just one struggle after another to stay alive.”

Rather than argue with the element of accuracy in that statement, I ask you if it s possible to enjoy life with such a mindset? Like most generalizations about life, it falls far short of being the complete truth.

Part of the complete truth is that we have the choice to see this life as a moment-to-moment opportunity to express our creative power. We do not have to deny the certainty of pain and suffering to affirm the incredible opportunities we have to learn, enjoy and grow.

Someone has said living well is like licking honey from a knife. It is delicious but it is important to learn to do it skillfully. It is vital to live with awareness -- to be attentive in all things we do, enjoying the great tastes of life but being conscious of what we are doing.

Some pain is inevitable but if we go around expecting pain we will get little else. If we expect honey, we will get honey.

It is a fundamental fact of life that our mind is the magnet that draws experiences to us. Job said it well when he concluded, “That which I feared (fastened my thought upon) has come upon me.” Jesus said, “From the heart come the treasures of life…where your heart is (where your inner thought life is), there will be your treasures.”

We have this magnificent magnet to draw the honey of life into our minds. The highest possible way of life is to be aware of it and to use it skillfully. There is more honey than you could ever eat if you use your knife (mind) well.
