No matter how
positively we view life, we all are yoked to a wagon of
responsibilities, cares, inner insecurities and frustrations. We
all seek at all times to lighten our load. Alcohol, drugs,
recreation, television, sports and all the things we lean on to help us
"deal with the wagon" are simply ways we think will help us to
find peace and rest. None of them help a lot and none of them help for
long. Some of them become addictions that add a ton to our load. Someone once
introduced me as "a southern mystic" and I guess I really am a
mystic because one definition of that word is "one who believes in
the inner experience of God." All any of us can do is share our own
personal experience and I have found there is someone who wants to
help pull the wagon. He said, "My yoke is easy ... my
load is light ... you will find rest to your soul." Isn't that an
incredible idea -- that it can feel "easy" to be yoked to your
wagon and your load be "light"? How can that be? He
answers that question when he says "you will find rest to your
soul." No load is heavy when our soul is at rest. This Inner One is readily
available and responsive to an open door in the heart. When we
become aware of this Presence we find it to actually be the Essence
of our own inner being. I love the story
of the prodigal son. The single thing that most stands out to me in that
parable is the simple way the father warmly and joyously welcomed
him home. He wanted to blubber and blabber about his sins and mistakes
and the father never paid any attention at all to his self-flagellation.
He just opened his arms and hugged him. Life is so uncomplicated. We are here to learn and grow. We are here to find rest for our souls and we have One to help us if we will simply ask. Dalton's writings
