Which Day Isn’t Holy?
Sunday I was playing at the Balsam Country Inn in
Balsam, North Carolina. I not only had no computer, I had no TV! So here I
am doing My Sunday Journal on Monday.
It reminds me of the endless debate on which day is the legitimate
Sabbath. From my study of the Bible, I would say the Adventists are right
about Saturday being the day but I have no idea which calendar was in
effect when the “remember the Sabbath” commandment was handed down.
My question is, “Which day is it that we are not supposed to keep
holy?” If we only see the Sabbath as holy, we will not look for the
sacred in other days.
Tuesday was sacred to me. I was writing songs with Taylor Pie, one of my
favorite writers and singers. I was sleeping in a room with no phone or
TV. That was very special. You cannot do creative things as well in the
midst of distractions, noise, daily rituals and visitations.
Tuesday was so sacred we stayed up until 2:00 making music and writing.
Getting lost in music for such a long time is one of life’s most sacred
times to me.
Wednesday was very special because we created a song. Creating a song is
like making a baby. That song will always be your brainchild whether or
not it is a hit. Some of your children become famous and some don’t but
you love them just the same. So it is with songs.
Thursday was special because Jerre Haskew, a founding member of the
original Cumberland Trio, joined us for the writing and picking party.
Both of us could easily talk the ears right off a mule and what is more
sacred than a good heart-to-heart talk with a treasured friend?
Friday was special because brainchild #2 was born: “Get Back to Balsam
Blues.” What can you give the world that will soothe old weary hearts
like a good blues song?
Saturday was special because Pie, Jerre and I played a two-hour show for
the great people of western North Carolina who come to the Balsam Country
Inn for singer-songwriter nights. Never have I played for a warmer and
more appreciative group.
Sunday was special because I stopped in Cleveland on the way home and had
lunch with Donnie Jenkins, one of the best guitar players I have ever
heard. I hand delivered a signed copy of Pie’s CD. He has been her fan
since she sang with Pogo Seco. I thought he was going to kiss me and I
would still be washing my face if he had. Since he didn’t, that made
Sunday a special day.
Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there will be your heart also,”
or was it “where your heart is, there will be your treasure also”?
Does it matter? Both mean the same. If you treasure the moments of every
day, every day is holy.
