Any Star Trek fan knows that the Star Trek
is premised, in part, on the words “where no man has gone before…”
Today, I am writing about a man most of
you do not know. I want to take a few words a pay tribute to an old
friend. Several years ago, I was privileged to
serve as Chair of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Law Office
Technology and Management Section. When I received the appointment, I
was assigned the task of taking the Association into the 21st
Century—a part of that task was to create a presence on the Internet.
The Bar Association accomplished the task by establishing an award
winning page-TBALink. During this time, I was privileged to learn
about the value, and importance, of technology. The success of TBALink
was not due to any of my work, but due to the work of a unique human
being, a man who took the lawyers of this State to places they “have
never been before.” Lee Riggs was a pioneer. He believed in the
value of the internet before most of the world understood the Internet.
He was a technological genius with vision, the type of vision that
allowed me to see what the future could be, and would be, for all people
living in today’s world. Lee Riggs had character; his character was
demonstrated by the dedication of his work, the dedication to his
profession, his dedication to his friends and his dedication to his
family. He was a model for all of us to follow. I learned recently of Mr. Riggs death, he
succumbed to cancer. Although Mr. Riggs is gone, his vision lives on in
the lives of the many people he touched. Lee Riggs was a true pioneer—Lee Riggs
contributed to this State’s legal profession, and to its people. He
moved us into the 21st Century, and he never looked back. Without Lee Riggs, our state is minus one true
visionary. I am glad to have known Lee because he took me… where no human has gone before.
