WHERE DO ROADS GO
THAT ARE NO LONGER THERE?

The times I remember
that bring the best feelings
were when happy to ourselves in the car
we were moving from the past,
going somewhere we'd not been before,
and for the moment outran those demons
that grew so well in the dark corners
of our domesticity.

When I remember those roads
we once traveled
and the feelings they gave,
I wonder if it's still out there somewhere,
like a length of old asphalt highway,
bypassed by freeways,
weedgrown, cutoff, and isolated
in a bright green meadow,
left going from nowhere to nowhere.
