THE HUNTER COMES FULL CIRCLE
    (Based on a true story)

J.B.,  our local great white hunter,
when he did his first bear clip, so suddenly
with love did burn, he kissed the dead beast
on the lip (the bear did not the kiss return).

Each fall after he ventured forth, and many
a dumb creature did lay low. With telescopic
sight he rarely missed--yet claimed for each
his love did flow.

He hunted the elephant to make footstool,
and love leapt from his rifle bore. He
killed the leopard, the buffalo too.
Each victim fed his love the more.

Then came the fall of ninety-four,
when a hunter on J. his sights did fix,
saw him (blending with leaves too well?)
thought MOOSE and fired his thirty-ought-six.

Now J. has joined those animals
that he dispatched in seasons past.
Did his slayer feel love? All we can
know is that this hunt was J.B.'s last.
