Stillness

By Nancy J. Reed

I awake to the sweet chirping of birdsong at dawn,

Drinking in the quiet hush that surrounds me there,

So peaceful, the stillness behind my garden wall,

While snow begins to fall and silence descends thick,

Upon the countryside, now resplendent in the sunlight,

Glistening, as if paying homage to the Creator of it all.

Thank you, dear Lord, for the quiet, calming tranquility,

As if You were speaking to me with words so tender,

Touching my heart, lovingly setting my weary spirit free.

And after winter’s days are spent, I will be comforted,

By the beauty of the awakening of nature that surrounds me,

With the return of spring, once again filling my heart with joy,

At the sight of crocus pushing through the snow,

My spirit seeking the blessed renewal I, too, would know.

As the warm sun coaxes the flower blossoms into bloom,

Opening their delicate petals, so fragrant and fair,

I give thanks in the stillness of my garden, as I tarry there.

For I know I will not have believed in vain His promise,

Of rebirth, also, for His own, into an everlasting tomorrow,

A world freed from death, pain and sorrow.
